Founded in 2020 by Jeanine Roux — a teacher with a passion for children, coffee and alternative education — Khula began with just five children around a kitchen table. Four years later, we support over 50 children aged 18 months to 18 years across our various programmes, with a growing team of passionate educators dedicated to inclusive and individualised learning.

Khula Learning Foundation is a registered Non-Profit Company (NPC 2017/065749/08) and Public Benefit Organisation (PBO 9300 648 446), operating as a private special school for learners from Grades R–7.

The Foundation provides small-group education for children who benefit from a more structured and supported environment than mainstream schooling can offer. Our classrooms are low-ratio, calm and sensory-aware, allowing learners to receive individual attention while still being part of a nurturing learning community. We follow the mainstream CAPS curriculum, ensuring that learners meet national academic standards while accessing the curriculum at a pace and level that suits their needs.

Teaching is bilingual (Afrikaans and English), and our approach combines strong academic structure with support for emotional regulation, executive functioning and overall wellbeing. Our goal is to build solid foundations — academically, socially and emotionally — so that every child can grow in confidence and capability.
Khula Learning Centre operates alongside the Foundation and serves learners in Grades 8–12. The Learning Centre is a tutor centre that provides structured academic support classes for learners registered as homeschoolers. Senior phase learners make use of IMPAQ’s CAPS-aligned curriculum, which allows them to work at their own pace while receiving focused academic guidance and small-group support. Learners are able to complete their schooling through IMPAQ or, where appropriate, transition back into mainstream education.

It is important to note that Khula Learning Centre is not a school. It is a tutor centre providing educational support services to registered home-educated learners. Parents remain responsible for curriculum registration and homeschooling compliance, while our team provides structured guidance, supervision and academic reinforcement.

Khula was built on the belief that children thrive in environments where they are seen, understood and supported. What began as five children and two teachers has grown into a dynamic learning community fuelled by expertise, kindness, and just enough coffee to keep it all running. Our heart remains the same: with the right nurturing, every child can grow.
